IN TIMES OF RECESSION, effective career guidance can really make a difference in someone's life.
When a job seeker needs to be clear on what jobs are available, how they match up and how to convince an employer they are the best applicant, they can try and do it alone but are likely to succeed more quickly and stand a better chance of being successful in job search when they have the support and guidance of an effective coach and adviser.
Each month the number of job losses rise and so does the number of people seeking work. Jobs are still available but many of these are low paid, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of people applying for more interesting and lucrative posts.
It's not unknown for a company to receive literally hundreds of applications; to get shortlisted the applicant has to have a highly focused application form, CV and letter, being clear on why they are right for the job. The old advice doesn't work, but some advisers are following the old model — get lots of applications out and one of them will getyou the job. But if you want to hit a target you need to be a sniper, not use a shotgun.
Few people have the luxury of an outplacement package costing thousands of pounds and many are struggling alone, using books and internet resources. There is a need for cost-effective help.
If we work in private practice we need to make sure that people know we exist — plenty of others are getting involved and are good at marketing.
